Transitioning from Picture Symbols to Words
Introduces simple language and sentence patterns through picture symbols.
Students learn new vocabulary, read sentences, and sequence and match pictures to words. Skills such as following directions, cutting and pasting are also addressed.
Each unit moves on to answering simple questions about each story through the use of picture symbols and words. For students capable of the transition, the last exercise of each unit is written in words only.
The program consists of 8 units of 7 exercises each. Review Sessions after units 4 and 8 contain exercises each relating to the 4 preceding units.
Can be used with a wide range of students, from first grade through the secondary grades.
Created by special education teachers and tested with students who have intellectual disabilities, as well as students with hearing impairments.
