Every morning I get up with a stiff neck. Why does this happen and how can I fix it?
The neck is formed around seven mobile cervical vertebrae, C1-7 as seen in the diagram. While straight when seen from the front, viewed from the side, the cervical spine has a convex forward curve, referred to as lordosis. As we age, there is a progressive loss of spinal flexibility, so better anatomic support is necessary during sleep. When sleeping supine (face up), putting the smaller side of the Avana™ Contour Pillow under the hollow of the neck supports your cervical lordosis. If you sleep on your side, placing the larger portion of the Avana™ Contour Pillow under your neck will accommodate shoulder height to keep the neck straight (as seen from the side) and prevent that morning "crick."

Is it OK to sleep on your stomach?
While not absolutely wrong, the cervical rotation necessary in prone (face down) sleeping severely rotates the neck vertebrae. This stresses the intervetebral discs as well as the facets joints, small joints in the back. You may find that this causes pain and stiffness in the morning.

When my neck hurts, the pain sometimes spreads to my shoulder and arm. Does this mean I have a slipped disc or a pinched nerve?
Not necessarily. Because of the sensitive nature of the spinal nerves and their proximity to discs and bones, even minor irritations may result in pain which radiates towards the arm. If the source of the irritation are removed this will likely resolve, even though it may take weeks or months. Numbness, tingling and weakness are warning signs that should be checked by a doctor.
