The Importance of Play

Recreational activity for children is considered play time. Children may playfully imitate activities that mimic the realities of adult life they have observed. Recreation is an important part of a child’s life and can come in different forms that are shaped naturally by their interests and by those around them. Activities can be done in groups or individually, active or passive, and indoors or outdoors.

Playgrounds often have recreational equipment such as a merry-go-round, seesaw, slide, swing set, jungle gym, monkey bars, chin-up bars, climbing wall, overhead ladder, trapeze rings, mazes, or playhouses. All of these can help children develop physical strength, coordination, and flexibility, as well as provide enjoyment and recreation. Also common on some playgrounds are play structures that link many different pieces of equipment together.

How does Recreation Affect Child Development?

Social skills that a child develops on the playground often become lifelong skill sets that are carried into their adult life. Playgrounds are among the most important environments for a child outside the home. Most forms of play are critical for healthy development, but spontaneous play, the kind that happens on the playground, is the most beneficial type of play. Engaging, challenging and exciting recreational equipment is important to keep a child happy while still developing their learning abilities.

Physical activity helps reduce the risk of psychological problems in a child and builds up their self-esteem. Self-esteem is enhanced through the encouragement of self-development and physical mastery. Playgrounds provide an ideal opportunity for a child to master physical skills, such as balance, climbing, and learning to swing. Through the enhancement of skills personal development may be gained, such as communicating, playing, and cooperating with other children and adults on the playground. Regular activity may also reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, and can improve overall mood.

Playgrounds often act as a preventative health measure for a child because they promote physical activity at a time in a child’s life when they are active. Regular physical activity contributes to overall health and helps reduce the risk of disease as an adult. It can help children and adolescents develop healthy physical activity behaviors that they can continue throughout their lives.

Participating in regular activity also increases bone and muscle strength, increases lean muscle mass, helps decrease body fat, and helps maintain weight which is a key part of any weight loss program. Significant health benefits can be gained by participating in a moderate about of physical activity, such as 15 minutes of running, 30 minutes of brisk walking or 45 minutes of playing a sport.
