Mills bought a sewing machine and started making aprons for the Chicago stockyards in his Chicago home under the company name of Northwestern Garment Factory. During this time, nuns from a local hospital approached A.L. Mills to inquire about making surgeon’s gowns and nursing uniforms. Thus began the company's journey into the medical supply field.
