What is a task lamp?

Task lamps, or task lighting, serves a different purpose than a table lamp or other general purpose lighting used to illuminate living spaces or workplaces.

Task lamps, as their name implies, are designed to make particular tasks easier and safer to perform, more accurately and with less eye strain.

These tasks may include work done by a student at their desk, an office worker at their computer, an artist or architect at their drafting table, a doctor performing life-saving surgery, or by a machine shop worker using a tool which can be dangerous without proper lighting and visibility.

Task lamps may use three different types of lighting, or sometimes a combination.

Incandescent lighting – this is the old-fashioned light bulbs we all grew up with. Incandescent lighting is known to skew colors and offer lighting that is flickery and sometimes uncomfortable to look at. This is the least efficient form of lighting, and as such is quickly becoming outdated as it's replaced with newer forms of light.

Halogen lighting – this is the lighting that’s closest to natural daylight. Artists often enjoy using it for this reason, as they feel it gives the truest representation of colors. The main difficulty to be had with Halogen lighting is that these bulbs cannot be touched. When on they heat up enough to cause severe burns and are extremely sensitive to skin oils, which can cause them to malfunction or burst. The “up” side to halogens, however, is that they are incredibly long-lasting with a burn time of about 3600 hours!

LED lighting – LED stands for light-emitting diodes. These are becoming the lighting of choice for almost any task lighting. The bulbs last even longer than halogens – up to 50,000 hours – contain no harmful gases or toxins, and are available in different shades of white to accommodate the needs of different tasks.

RehabMart is proud to offer task lighting by vendors including Aven Inc., Brewer Company, Daylight, and LSS.

Why choose a task lamp?

In the workplace, poor lighting and the headaches and eye strain that result are common complaints. With the right task lamps, these problems can be eliminated.

Workers in their 20s need different lighting than workers in their 50s or 60s. By using task lamps on desks and at workstations, individual needs can be accommodated and worker productivity can be increased.

When working with tools, machines and other potentially hazardous equipment, proper task lighting can prevent accident and injury.

Artists’ lamps use LED bulbs that simulate daylight. This type of lighting allows the best ability to match colors precisely, as well as to do detailed artwork without eye strain.

In general, lamps that simulate daylight do the best job of eliminating glare and reducing eye strain. They are more environmentally friendly as well, using about 80% less energy.

How to choose a task lamp

Task lamps provide focused lighting, rather than the ambient lighting provided by most other types of lamps and ceiling lights.

Probably the most common type of task lighting people are familiar with is the standard desk lamp. Some desk lamps have a swing arm that allows the user to bring the light source as close to a piece of work as they need to. If you work on detailed drawings, this is an ideal choice.

A magnifying desk lamp provides even sharper visibility. It features a magnifying glass surrounded by a ring of light, and is good for working on intricate drawings or assembling small machine parts such as computer chips. People with low vision will also benefit from a magnifying desk lamp.

Some task lamps do provide ambient lighting as well. These are usually free-standing floor lamps, rather than desk lamps. The two light sources can be adjusted separately, providing focused lighting for work while at the same time providing environmental lighting.

Surgical lamps are normally on wheels so they can be moved around to provide light exactly where it is needed during a surgical procedure. The light they provide is extremely crisp, usually supplied by a halogen bulb. Surgical lamps have film-coated reflectors that prevent the bulb from overheating, even if it is used for hours. In this way, medical personnel are not concerned about fires, especially if something touches the bulb.

Features to consider

If you are looking for task lighting for your home or office, here are some things you should think about:

  • Adjustability: The amount of lamp adjustment you need for your usual tasks is another factor to take into account when choosing a lamp. If you'll frequently require the ability to move and readjust, then choosing a lamp with a flexible or easily-adjustable neck might be the best option.
  • Reach: Depending on the size of your work surface and/or work area you might need a lamp with a shorter or longer reach. If you work mostly on larger projects that require a great deal of light mobility, choosing a wider-reaching lamp will provide greater illumination as well as convenience.
  • Magnification: If your projects are often small and very finely detailed, or if you happen to be farsighted and have difficulty seeing things closer to you, choosing a task lamp with some magnification might help reduce the difficulty and eye strain of working on highly detailed tasks.
  • Style: Sleek and modern or old-fashioned, there’s a style for you, and you can find one that also matches your task needs.
  • Size: Some task lamps are small enough to fit on a small desk, while others are floor lamps that take up both floor space and “air space.” Depending on the focus and area you need for your light to cover and the space available in your works area, a larger or smaller lamp might be a better choice.
  • Bulb type: LED bulbs offer a cool light that picks up sharp contrasts, while halogen bulbs cast a warmer, lower contrasting light. However, many LED bulbs are coming out with warmer light, so be sure to take a look at all your options and even test a few before making your final choice.

Task lamps are a tool that can make work easier and more efficient, save time, decrease frustration, and help productivity.
