What types of neck supports are there?

Neck supports can range from soft pillow rolls to cervical collars, and encompass a wide range of products in between. The main thing all of these tools have in common is that they help support the head and neck in a comfortable, ergonomic posture.

Aside from that, however, these tools can be very different in terms of how they're used, what they're made of, and who tends to use them.

Neck Support Pillows

A neck support pillow is a therapeutic pillow made to help promote spinal alignment and relieve neck pain during sleep. Often, people wake up with a stiff neck or pain in the head, head, or shoulders due to bad sleeping posture and pillows that aren't supportive.

Even if neck pain is caused by other sources like an injury, poor neck support from your pillow can make these conditions worse. A neck pillow can be made in different materials and designs to give support to the neck in various ways.

Cervical Pillows

Cervical pillows are traditional bed pillows designed with a specialized indentation or contour to properly position the neck for correct spinal alignment. These are great for long-term comfort and support even for people not currently experiencing neck pain.

Travel Neck Pillows

Probably the most common image that comes to mind when people think of neck pillows is the horseshoe shape of a travel pillow. They offer great comfort and support for the head and neck while traveling, but can also serve as great supports for people with chronic pain and injuries trying to stay comfortable.

Neck Pillow Roll

A neck pillow roll, which is log-shaped or cylindrical, is preferred by some over the traditional indentation-style cervical pillow. This type helps keep the head from moving around too much for some sleepers, but for others it may stretch the neck too far upward.

What is a Cervical Neck Collar?

A cervical neck collar is used to either immobilize or stabilize the neck as a way to help relieve pain in the neck area. It also helps make sure the neck and surrounding muscles are not strained after a surgical procedure or injury. Sometimes a neck collar is used to relieve discomfort and tightness in the neck, and other times it is used to help those suffering from a pinched nerve. It is important to use a neck collar according to the instructions given by a medical professional.

A neck collar that is used to immobilize the neck can be made of a rigid material. This is necessary when it is crucial that the neck does not move at all. This type is usually constructed out of a kind of hard plastic. It will also have padding around the areas that come into direct contact with the shoulders and chin to make the collar as comfortable as possible to wear. A firm foam neck collar is made to help relieve pain and discomfort by helping to support the neck and minimize neck movement. It is important to use the type of neck collar which is recommended by a doctor.
