Abely Lift Me Up: Comfortable, Adjustable Recovery in Your Own Bed

Sometimes the best solution to a problem can only be created by those people living with it firsthand. This is certainly true of Sabine Hairabedian, founder and CEO of the New York-based Abely, LLC shown here receiving the Medtrade New Product Silver Award in November of 2018.

In 2014 Hairabedian was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent major surgery. After this happened, she returned home with greatly limited mobility and strength.

As she describes, “I ended up in my bed but I was unable to move. I couldn’t get out. I could not sit up. I was stuck in one position, and that was frustrating for a fairly young and active woman.”

Hairabedian was fortunate to have caregivers to help her, but the experience helped her to understand the frustration involved in having to ask others for assistance. It also helped her understand how that loss of independence can start to adversely affect your feelings of self-worth, confidence, and self-reliance.

Thanks to her first-hand experience with limited mobility combined with her mechanical engineering and product development background, Hairabedian was moved to create a product that would help support people who have to lie in bed for long periods of time. She wanted to provide aid to those also recovering from surgery at home, and to those with weakened or limited upper and lower body strength, who cannot move in bed.

And she aimed to do this without the use of an actual hospital bed. Hospital beds are generally quite expensive, extremely heavy, take up a lot of room, and often have to be set up in a den or separate room than the bedroom where the user usually sleeps. Hairabedian wanted her design to be more inclusive and economical, incorporating all the same adjustment features as a hospital bed, but keeping the patient in their own bed where they can be more comfortable and even sleep next to a partner.

“People don’t like hospital beds. Hospital beds carry a stigma; either you are very sick or at the end of your life,” Hairabedian says. “This is about maintaining a normal lifestyle and being next to your bed partner.”

In 2016, after multiple prototypes and extensive user feedback, Hairabedian and her female-owned and operated company Abely, LLC, introduced the Abely Lift Me Up Adjustable Bed Surface for Recline and Elevation, an adjustable bed surface designed to support the motion of sitting up and laying down as well as to elevate the feet and legs, all while keeping the user in their own bed.

The Abely Difference

As a self-described “fierce independent spirit”, Hairabedian is passionate in her aspirations to help others live a better life with her company’s first product, the Abely Lift Me Up. Especially when they have to spend a good portion of that life in bed due to a variety of conditions including post-surgical recovery, disability, aging, weakness, disease, and illness

The Abely Lift allows people to be more independent and to remain in their own bed, providing powered, adjustable positioning support for the upper body, lower body, or both. Costing a fraction of the price of a hospital bed & mattress, the Abely lift offers all of the same adjustment benefits, simply and easily converting the user’s own bed into a perfect, comfortable recovery surface. This alterable bed surface raises and reclines as needed to help the user attain different positions while in bed, and also to make getting in and out of bed easier.

Its unique, simplified, and ready-to-use design includes a durable, steel tubular frame, wooden slats for support, a smooth and silent motor, a hand control, a medium-density memory foam topper, and a customized, fitted sheet. An optional pillow holder keeps the pillow conveniently in place when in the raised positions. And, right now you can also receive a FREE pillow holder with every Abely purchase with our special offer! No coupon codes required!

The Abely Lift Me Up is ready to use right out of the box, with no tools or assembly required. Weighing only 20 pounds, it is highly portable, and can be easily brought along on trips to use on any bed surface in a hotel, resort, or even when visiting friends and family. Although it is lightweight, it also provides exceptional stability and support for users weighing up to 275 pounds.

How does the Lift Me Up work?

The Abely Lift Me Up should be positioned on top of the user’s existing mattress, with its frame on the bottom and the included foam topper on the top, sliding over the backrest. The topper is specially profiled at its lower end so that it blends with the bed’s mattress, and is secured in place with the fitted sheet, wrapping around the back plate and metal frame of the lift.

A built-in hook holds the hand control, ensuring it never gets out of reach, and is always easy to locate. Once the Abelift is plugged in, it’s ready to start working. The quiet-running motor initiates smooth elevation and recline as required by the user, with the simple touch of a button on the hand control.

This assistive lift device can be used to recline and elevate the upper body, the lower body, or you can order a package of two Abelifts and use both!

The Lift Me Up puts users in control of their own positioning needs, allowing them to get in and out of bed independently. It allows them to use their own bed, eliminating the need for a hospital bed, and is a much more economical and affordable option.

As an adjustable surface that can be added to any bed, the Abely lift is innovatively designed to allow users to manage their own positioning requirements, eliminating the need for caregiving assistance for movements in bed. It can even be used on sofas and other flat surfaces to offer recline and elevation capabilities for customized, supported positioning no matter where you go!

Who Can Benefit From the Lift Me Up?

Providing all the same adjustability features as a hospital bed, the Abely Lift is ideal for use by anyone who needs positioning assistance with recline and elevation while in bed or lying down. It is popular with people who have upper or lower body weakness, limited mobility, or disabilities that make it difficult or impossible for users to move in bed.

In addition, the Lift Me Up is perfect for people who require some elevation when lying down because of acid reflux or respiratory congestion. It also works significantly better than pillows for any bed or sofa positioning support needs.

Most folks really appreciate the benefit of being able to sleep in their own bed, thanks to the Abelift's innovative design. Being ill, vulnerable, recovering from surgery, or dealing with disease is not the time people want to be separated from their loved one they usually sleep with, or the bed and room they feel most comfortable in.

“When people are not doing well, either post surgery, during life changes, managing chronic disease, or even with conditions such as nasal congestion and acid reflux where sleeping at in incline is recommended, being able to stay in their own bed is very important,” says Hairabedian.

The Abely Lift Me Up empowers users to help themselves, keeping life as normal as possible while confined to bed, enabling and maintaining their independence, mobility, and dignity.
