The Most Advanced Gel Wheelchair Cushion: Saddle by Comfort Company

Video Transcript

When you have specific positioning needs, finding the right wheelchair cushion can seem daunting.

The Saddle Wheelchair Cushion from The Comfort Company comes in a variety of positioning options, and even includes the ability to add pressure relieving gel.

All Saddle models are composed of two layers of high resiliency foam with a coccyx cutout to take pressure off your tailbone, deep lateral and medial leg contours to promote an upright body position, and a waterfall front to take pressure off your legs.

From here you can decide between Zero Elevation, Wedge, and Anti-thrust options, depending on your needs. And we definitely recommend adding The Comfort Company's QuadraGel option, as this gel helps regulate temperature and provides additional pressure relief.

The Comfort Company has a great range of cover options, as well! Their Stretch-Air fabric is breathable and waterproof, while their Comfort-Tek cover is extremely soft, waterproof, and easier to clean by hand.

At around $200 for any of the options with gel, the Saddle Wheelchair Cushion from the Comfort Company combines superior comfort with superior positioning options - which is why we're rating it the most advanced cushion in the gel category!

Who should use this wheelchair cushion?

This cushion is designed not only to improve posture, but also to prevent or heal problems that can arise from remaining seated in a wheelchair long-term, such as skin shearing and pressure ulcers.

The unique coccyx cutout prevents the backside from coming into contact with the seating surface, which prevents pain from sitting for long periods. It also reduces discomfort caused by chronic pain conditions and inflammation.

Each of the three available styles of this cushion fulfills different needs and preferences.

The Zero Elevation, true to its name, does not add extra height and provides maximum freedom of movement during use.

In contrast, the Wedge works to prevent forward leaning and the additional pressure on the sit bones that can result by adding height to the front of the cushion.

For those at risk of sliding forwards while using their mobility device, the Anti-thrust model builds up support in the middle of the cushion to properly align the thighs and pelvis. By keeping the sit bones where they should be, this is ideal for those who tend to slide (rather than lean) forwards.

All three models can be equipped with the optional Quadra-Gel insert, which evenly distributes pressure and keeps the seating area cool. If you or your loved one has experienced problems with skin integrity resulting from long-term wheelchair use, this feature adds an extra level of protection.

Comfort Company’s Saddle cushion is not currently available in pediatric sizes, but it comes in over a dozen sizes, some which can support up to 400 pounds, and so can suit a variety of users.
