When you think of the term “syringe”, what comes to mind? Visions of doctor’s offices, clinics, and hospitals? Maybe you think of a blood drive or a vaccination center. In truth, all of these settings play host to syringes!

There are a ton of syringe systems available, whether you’re seeking a specific tip or recommended usage. Syringe tips refer to the area where the syringe body “locks” to the blade/needle, and are offered in 4 styles:

  • Luer Lock Tips: The syringe blade twists together to connect with the syringe body. This is easily the most well-known of all types of syringe tips.
  • Slip Tips: Features a small, simple connection that’s ideal for when a syringe is being connected to a syringe body that doesn’t feature a screw lock mechanism.
  • Catheter Tips: Basically the same as a slip tip, however, it boasts a longer, tapered design. This style of syringe tip is great for pushing into surfaces that need a tight seal. Catheter tips can also be used to clean and rinse large abscesses and wounds.
  • Eccentric Tips: This style of syringe tip utilizes a unique design where the nozzle at the end of the syringe body is not centered, but rather is off to the side. This type of syringe tip is ideal for use in situations where the needle needs to be extremely close and parallel to the injection surface (like in a surface vein or artery).

Syringe bodies also come in a plethora of options, like standard U-100 insulin syringes, multishot needle syringes, venom extraction syringes, oral syringes, dental syringes, and dose-sparing syringes. But what are these exactly?

  • Standard U-100 Insulin Syringes: These syringes are used for the delivery of insulin to patients with diabetes, and are specially designed for self-injections.
  • Multishot Needle Syringes: This style of syringe is intended to “reload” from a built-in tank within the syringe after each injection, making it possible to make several injections from a single filling. These types of syringes are most often used by diabetic patients who are injecting insulin, but should not be used by more than one patient. Because of this syringe’s non-disposable design, it’s most often utilized in personal settings and is not a mainstay in general medicine.
  • Venom Extraction Syringes: These syringes do just as the name implies! They’re meant to be placed over a bite/wound and gently vacuum suction the venom out.
  • Oral Syringes: These are extremely common and are often used to administer liquid medication to children and adults. Remember that pink cough syrup that was the go-to cold cure as a kid? This style of syringe was used to deliver it!
  • Dental Syringes: This kind of syringe is mainly used by dentists and oral surgeons who need to inject anesthetic into the mouths of their patients. They’re composed of a breech-loading syringe that’s fitted with a sealed cartridge.
  • Dose-Sparing Syringes: These syringes are meant to minimize the amount of medication that’s delivered to the patient. These types of syringes are extremely popular for use in vaccinations, especially when the vaccine doses are in limited supply.
