Phillip McMullen II, MD, PhD

Philip McMullen II was born and raised in Ohio, where he attended Miami University, He graduated with a BA in Microbiology and a minor in Molecular Biology. During college, he married his wife Amanda, and they moved to Chicago together after graduation.

In Chicago, Philip attended the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine, and performed his research training on the genetic associations to tissue tropism in Listeria monocytogenes.

When not researching, writing about, and practicing medicine, Phillip enjoys spending time with his two children and his wife, who also works as a freelance writer. In his spare time, Phillip enjoys backpacking, camping, rock climbing, playing guitar and gaming.

  • Phillip obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Miami University with a concentration in Microbiology. During his time at Miami, Phillip studied pre-medical courses, including biology, physics, chemistry and psychology.

  • Phillip earned his Ph.D. in June 2014. His thesis was entitled "Factors of the bacterial pathogen Listeria monocytogenes which influence niche acquisition within hosts."
