John Box: A Rebel With A Cause

At first glance, the name “Spazz” could appear to be a bit of a misnomer - after all, how many times have children with disabilities been called this name, typically in a way that is intentionally meant to offend?

Unless, of course, you’re John Box. John takes a very different point of view on this line of thinking.

In 1981, a motorcycle accident left John paralyzed. A decade later in 1992, he founded Colours in Motion, a mobility company that does more than just design and sell unique, ultra-light wheelchairs with names like RazorBlade, Zephyr and, yes, Spazz.

John seeks to incite positive change for the disabled community, starting by challenging the labels used to talk about individuals who are physically challenged.

By taking ownership of the labels that others use to describe them and stripping them of their negative meaning, individuals with disabilities can take back an element of control over how they are viewed in the world.

This “out of the box”, dynamic thinking extends to everything that Colours in Motion does.

Colours in Motion wheelchairs are designed for both adults and children, and are highly customizable with a variety of choices in wheel style, color, lock mechanisms and more. Some chairs are built with extreme physical comfort in mind, while others are uniquely designed for taking on sports and all-terrain travel with ease and style.

What makes Colours in Motion wheelchairs different?

Colours wheelchairs are built for a lifestyle, not just a life. They are custom-designed to represent the individual. As stated on the company website, “We make products that empower users to become their best selves. Individuality and independence of the people who use our chairs will always be our number one concern.”

This mission is reflected in the range of styles and options available in Colours wheelchairs. Whether it’s a custom-painted chair, a snazzy wheel style or a more practical, custom-built seating system to meet the user’s particular physical needs, these are chairs that become an integrated part of a person’s life, rather than just a tool for getting place to place.

Colours in Motion also offers a series of Sports wheelchairs for more active users.

Who would benefit from a Colours wheelchair?

Wheelchair users who are looking for a different approach to everyday life, or those who are tired of using a wheelchair that is burdened by a clinical, generic design will find something different and exciting in the Colours line of wheelchairs.

For adolescents in particular, the multi-colored wheel spokes, colored tires and sporty look of the Colours line will be sure to please instill pride. Parents will also love the adjustability and portability of these pediatric wheelchairs: all have a weight capacity of 250 pounds, meaning they are not restricted to only assisting small children.

Colours’ adult wheelchairs include models that are built for taking on sports and the great outdoors. Their BC Skate chair features the only air ride suspension system offered in a wheelchair today!

What Colours in Motion customers are saying

Several users of the Colours in Motion Razorblade wheelchair have given glowing reviews of their experience with this particular model.

A 35-year-old mother with lupus and severe arthritis says this chair is very easy to get in and out of, in addition to being easy to transport via car. It’s lightweight, easy to use, and she feels like she can have a “new chair every day,” given the many color and style options available to her!

Another 23-year-old woman with polio says the chair is “easy to maneuver through life with.” This is exactly what John Box had in mind!
