Leggero: Making Better Strollers for Special Needs Kids

Leggero’s mission statement is simple: to provide mobility solutions for children worldwide. Their range of product offerings is focused on providing not just improved mobility but comfort and therapeutic support that accommodates the unique needs of each and every child.

Based in Bozeman, Montana, Leggero is in the business of designing and manufacturing special needs strollers for children, teens, and young adults who have a range of physical and medical requirements.

Leggero’s goal is to “enable the child and their family to explore the world around them,” rather than be limited by a lack of mobility.

To that end, their special needs strollers combine style, convenience, and therapeutic correctness in three lightweight models that grow with your child and accommodate their medical needs, making it easier to get out and do almost anything.

In addition to providing a superior product, Leggero is also a company with a heart. They support ROC Wheels, a non-profit also based in Bozeman, donating excess wheelchairs and mobility products to them in order to help children in need.

ROC stands for “Reach Out and Care.” Their mission is to “provide mobility and hope to people in developing countries by bringing them specialized wheelchairs.” ROC donates equipment to severely disabled children in parts of the world where access to wheelchairs and other mobility equipment is all but non-existent.

In this way, Leggero extends its reach and is true to its own goal of offering mobility solutions throughout the world.

What makes their products different?

Leggero has three featured strollers: the TRAK, the REACH, and the DYNO. These strollers are uniquely designed to provide maximum comfort and therapeutic support, while also supporting a wide range of adjustment points to ensure a custom fit and ideal accommodation.

The TRAK is a tilt-in-space wheelchair available in two sizes that features a full 30-degrees of hip angle adjustment and a unique RESPOND Contoured Seating System. The lightweight frame folds easily for compact travel, and includes the option to add convenient mounting accessories for a ventilator, oxygen tank, underframe tray, and IV pole.

The REACH stroller features three fixed tilt positioning options and a range of comfortable hip angle adjustment options. This chair is available in three sizes, and includes a unique LT Configurable Seating System for maximum comfort and ideal positioning. The sturdy yet lightweight aluminum frame folds compactly for easy transport and storage.

The DYNO is Leggero’s most versatile and adjustable stroller, featuring ACTIVATOR Dynamic Seating, 30 degrees of hip angle adjustment, and the RESPOND Contoured Seating System. The lightweight design includes all-terrain mobility that allows you and your child to fully explore anywhere they want to go.

The DYNO is the only compact, folding special needs chair that has been WC-19 tested. It has been approved for use as a seat in an automobile under Section 19 of the American National Standards Institute/Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America.

Leggero’s trademarked RESPOND seating system is an important feature of several of their strollers and chairs. The RESPOND system grows with your child, and can be configured precisely to their individual postural needs. This unique seating system provides thoracic (trunk), cervical (spine) and lumbar (lower back) support, making it both extremely comfortable and therapeutically sound.

Advantages and Benefits of Leggero Strollers

Most children’s strollers are not designed or equipped for exploring the world; they’re more of a “get-from-here-to-there” device. Leggero’s strollers, in contrast, are designed to make travel easy, and to help you and your child explore and navigate any sort of terrain so you can go where you want to.

All of their strollers are constructed with lightweight aluminum frames that fold to a length not much bigger than a yardstick, and can be stored in your trunk easily to make both transport and storage simple. The DYNO specifically is designed for all-terrain mobility, with a single front wheel to handle bumps and rough ground without jostling your child.

Children with various disabilities or physical mobility or positioning limitations can benefit from a special needs stroller like these.

The contoured seating system that includes trunk and head supports is perfect for supporting children with cerebral palsy, and for those with spasticity, the soft, contoured RESPOND seating system will gently support while allowing for movement.

Kyphosis, scoliosis, and lordosis are conditions that curve the spine forward, to the side or inward, respectively. For these children, the support offered by the RESPOND system is especially important. And, the 30-degree hip angle adjustment will assure better positioning of the spine over the hip bones.

Children with Rett syndrome not only have mobility issues but often have breathing problems. Again, the ability to adjust the recline of the back, and to support the trunk and head, is important for this condition.

Finally, children with autism and their parents will find Leggero especially comfortable and useful. For the child who has difficulty negotiating change in their daily lives, being able to use the same seat from the stroller to the car and back can eliminate a few transitions.
