Difficulties Associated with Transferring to a Toilet
Transferring to a toilet can be a difficult and unhygienic process. Since wheelchairs have such large wheels, it is a requirement to to transfer from the front corner of the chair. This leaves a large gap to jump across from the wheelchair to the toilet seat. The only location for the hands during wheelchair to toilet transfer are on the toilet seat. Sometimes grab bars are located on the wall next to the toilet, but for a successful transfer to take place, the hands need to be place below the transferer in order to help lift and slide the body.
