What is a Wall Mounted Shower Bench?

A wall mounted shower bench is an assistive device that can be added to a shower or bath area to make it possible for those who are not able to stand to still enjoy the benefits of bathing. It is a permanent addition to a shower, and is constructed of a stainless steel frame with padded or solid seating. The solid seat can be made of hard plastics, metal, phenolic, Naugahyde or teak, and may have a back rest along with arm rests for support.

In order for others to use the same shower, many benches fold up so they are out of the way until needed. Some shower benches raise and lower to help the caregiver by letting the wall and floor absorb the lifting force of the user. This type can be utilized in either dry or wet-room environments and is ideal for hydrotherapy, swimming, or bathrooms. A shower bench is well suited for those who are older, have an injury, or are not able to stand long enough to take a shower. It helps to avoid a fall or the need to hurry through a shower before personal strength is exhausted.

How do I Choose a Wall Mounted Shower Bench?

To choose the best wall mounted shower bench, consider the space that is available, the weight limit, and the comfort of a bench. A shower bench’s dimensions should be looked at first since there is a wide variety of shapes and sizes available. If space is an issue, a bath bench that folds up can be ideal. However, make sure the hinges are made of steel for proper support.

The weight limit of a shower bench must meet the needs of the user. The particular design often determines the weight limit of most benches. Configurations with self-supporting steel legs can accommodate up to 420 pounds, bariatric benches can support up to 900 pounds, and most have adjustable legs. Benches that rely solely on wall support can hold up to 300 pounds. They may also have left-sided or right-sided options, depending on the location of the shower head.

The comfort of a bench is also important to the user. Some are primarily hard plastic or teak, while others are designed with additional cushioning material for increased comfort. If an individual is small or underweight, cushioning can alleviate some of the discomfort which may arise from having a hard surface pressing against the bone.

Next, check out the mold resistance factor of the bench. All bath benches are water resistant, but they also should be waterproof so mold and bacteria do not grow on them. A shower bench should be able to withstand a standard scrubbing, so having a smooth, nonporous surface is best. This helps prevent microscopic organisms from hiding in the crevices and allows for a quick wipe down.

What is a Teak Shower Bench?

A teak shower bench is very durable, long-lasting, strong and sturdy, and is known for aging well with little maintenance. Additionally, it is better at withstanding moisture than most other wood varieties. By aging well, teak’s color eventually fades, but it becomes an attractive gray color and the fading is generally even across the wood. This helps to avoid spotting characteristics and other discolorations that other woods may have. Most teaks are stained, treated, or painted to protect from damage over time, plus the natural color remains after years of use.
