When using a breast pump, you may be overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices. What options are essential and which are overkill? First, you’ll need to determine what you’re looking to gain from a breast pump. Do you want something that’s compact and portable? Are you seeking an option that enables you to be hands-free while pumping? Would you prefer a single or double pump to minimize pumping time?

First, let’s break down the main differences in breast pumps:

  • Single or Double? Many women prefer to use a double breast pump to save on time, however, many others prefer a single breast pump since they don’t experience an equal rate of milk production in both breasts. How often and how much do you pump? If you produce milk at an equal rate and want to minimize overall pumping time, a double breast pump may be your ideal choice.
  • Manual or Powered? Where will you be pumping and do you wish to rely on batteries or plugs? If you’re an adventurous mom with a handful of errands on your to-do list, you may prefer a manual pump that requires minimal to no maintenance and upkeep. If you’re a mom who’s more focused on efficiency and hands-free use, you’ll most likely prefer a powered breast pump.
  • New or Used? To ensure you and your infant’s utmost health during breastfeeding, it’s highly discouraged to use a used or pre-owned breast pump. The FDA notes that “contaminated breast pumps can cause you and your baby to develop infection(s)”. This even applies to members of the same family! There are a lot of baby-centric items that can be handed down, however, a breast pump shouldn’t be one of them. ***Worth noting: RehabMart only sells new, unused breast pumps!***

RehabMart offers a number of breast pumps that are designed to help mothers better feed and care for their infants, each geared towards optimizing breastfeeding as much as possible. We understand that expanding the family is a difficult transitionary time and we look forward to assisting you in this exciting new journey of life!
