Ottobock is a world leader in manufacturing and distributing orthotic and prosthetic medical devices.
Founded in 1919 in Berlin, Germany, Otto Bock started a company called Orthopädische Industrie GmbH to help supply WWI victims with prostheses and orthopedic devices. He quickly realized that the huge demand of the wounded could not be met with the traditional hand-made methods of craftsmanship.
Bock realized he had to produce a mass-number of prosthetic components in a series of prosthetic devices and then deliver them directly to the doctors and specialist at the on-medical site or office, thus laying the manufacturing and distributing future foundation for the orthopedic industry.
Post-WWII had an effect on the company, in one way that the company was located in East Germany and the entire private assets of the family and the factory were expropriated by the then East German government. Around this time the son-in-law of Otto Bock established a sales location in the then Western Germany to supply the ‘western zone’. After which he became managing director and general partner in the new Ottobock Orthopädische Industrie KG in 1947.
As the years passed, the major manufacturing component of the prosthetic devices was still wood, which was becoming in short supply as a raw material. Due to the short supply of wood, Ottobock started using polyurethane synthetic materials in prosthetic devices for the first time-- which are still used today.
With company headquartered in Duderstadt, Germany, Ottobock went international in 1958 with its first Ottobock foreign market branch in Minneapolis, USA.
