How Does Red Light Therapy Work:

Red light therapy uses low-wavelength red and infrared light to penetrate the skin and feed energy to the mitochondria in your body, stimulating rapid cell turnover and increased circulation. This is what makes infrared therapy great for athletes and those who suffer from chronic pain. The increased circulation provides nutrient and oxygen-rich blood to areas of the body that have become injured or inflamed, promoting faster and more effective healing.

Red Light Therapy at Home:

To effectively use red light therapy at home, you must first consult your doctor or therapist on whether light therapy is right for you. After doing so it’s important to remember to:

  • Stay hydrated: studies show that hydrated skin absorbs red light therapy more efficiently as the cell is inflated and ready to receive the energy red light therapy produces
  • Set reminders: staying consistent is what makes red light therapy effective. It’s recommended that treatments be 3 - 5 times a week
  • Set a timer: treatments should last between 15 - 30 minutes daily. No proven results have been shown by increasing the length of a single treatment
  • Remove makeup: makeup and sunscreen effectively block harmful UV rays from entering and damaging our skin, however, it also prevents red light therapy from working effectively
  • Protect your eyes: each device has different strengths of red light therapy and near-infrared light, it’s important to read the manufacturer’s instructions to determine if eye protection is needed. If you are prone to photosensitivity due to medications, have light sensitivity due to migraines or other eye conditions, eyewear is recommended
  • Take photos: taking photos of yourself before and after red light therapy treatment shows your progress over time

Red light therapy can also be used for athletes training to increase their endurance by healing faster and with less soreness from each workout. Red light therapy panels are compact enough to fit into most home gyms and are more cost-effective than a full bed. Red light therapy panels come in:

  • Full body panels: these panels span the length of the whole body
  • Half-body panels: these panels span half the length of the body and allow for placement in smaller spaces
  • Portable panels: these portable red light panels can be brought into different rooms and placed throughout the home, making it ideal for smaller spaces such as apartments
  • Light therapy lamps: red light therapy lamps blend in with other decor in a home and can also be moved from room to room. These lamps tend to be a more budget-friendly way to receive treatment
