What are Bed Safety Rails?

Bed safety rails are barriers, which can be made from a type of metal or steel, that attach to one or both sides of a bed to prevent an individual from falling out of bed. They are an important means of providing security and safety for those who are confined to a bed for any length of time or for those who just need something to grab onto to get out of bed. Sometimes, an individual is not always able to think clearly due to an illness, accident or the medications being used to treat a medical condition. Therefore, a safety rail keeps them protected.

Fall prevention is very important for the elderly as well as children, and anyone with mobility challenges, when in bed. Bed safety rails enable a person to avoid possible injury from falling out of bed and help alleviate other risks that can be associated with falling, such as back, head, hip or leg injuries.

In some cases, the utilization of short bed rails is appropriate; this type does not extend the length of the whole bed. These can be as short as one foot in length or half the length of the bed, depending on personal needs. Some rails are adjustable in length to change as the individual’s needs change. Many times, short or adjustable bed rails are applied as an assistant for home care to create a safe environment while allowing the individual some freedom. This type of safety railing usually installs with supports that slide between the mattress and the box springs, but others may have the supports on the floor and attach to the bed frame. An individual can easily sit up next to the rail and use it as an aid to get in and out of bed. This type may not be right for those with a high degree of need, but many times a short rail is all that is necessary. This shorter style can have a weight capacity of up to 500 pounds.

Typically, bed safety rails are made of sturdy, adjustable metal bars that are attached directly to the bed frame. Most of these can be raised and lowered to allow the individual to be protected in bed when necessary, yet make it easy to move the rail out of the way to better care for them. Usually a healthcare provider can easily move the rail on the outside of the bed, but it is very difficult, if not impossible, for the person in the bed to move it. Some feature a padded pouch that can be used to store books, TV remote controls, glasses, and other small items that may be needed nearby while in bed.

Safety rail pads are normally made of durable, firm foam to provide practical safety and maximum rail cushioning and coverage. They may have quick release buckles built in to allow easy and fast application and removal. Normally, they can be wiped clean with a liquid disinfectant, and some have an optional window to enable continuous monitoring. These special pads can also be utilized to hinder side rail entrapment.
