What is a Telemetry Pouch?

A telemetry pouch is a durable, lightweight polyester pouch used to hold a cardiac, or telemetry, monitor conveniently over or under the clothing. It has soft straps for comfort around the neck, some have a strap for the torso, and most are adjustable to fit individual body sizes.

What is Cardiac Telemetry?

Cardiac telemetry is continuous monitoring of an individual’s heart rate and rhythm for those who are at risk of abnormal heart activity, recovering from heart events, or experiencing ongoing heart problems. This can be done in a hospital or at home, depending on the individual’s health and a physician’s recommendation. The data is collected in one location and transmitted to another.

In the case of an inpatient individual, the transmitter sends the signal to a monitoring station where it is watched by nurses and cardiologists. The patient can move around as long as the signal stays in range of the monitoring station. If the individual develops problems, the staff can quickly respond and arrhythmias and abnormalities can be noted and brought to the attention of the physician.

For those who are in an outpatient situation, the patient wears the cardiac monitor while performing everyday activities at home, work, or running errands. The monitor saves the information on a memory card, which is then returned after a certain length of time and sent to a cardiologist to study the recorded details for a full report.

Are there Other Applications for Telemetry?

A new and developing application for telemetry is in the field of neurophysiology called neurotelemetry (NT). Neurophysiology is the study of the peripheral and central nervous systems through the recording of bioelectrical activity, either stimulated or spontaneous. In neurotelemetry, the electroencephalogram (EEG) of an individual is remotely monitored by a registered EEF technologist using advanced software. The goal of NT is to notice a drop in an individual’s condition before physical symptoms and signs are present.

Neurotelemetry is synonymous with real-time continuous video EEG monitoring. It has applications in the neuro ICU, epilepsy monitoring unit, pediatric ICU, and newborn ICU. Because of the labor-intensive quality of continuous EEG monitoring, neurotelemetry is normally done in larger academic teaching hospitals using in-house programs which include IT support staff, a registered EEG technologist, neurologist, neurophysiologist, and monitoring support staff.

Modern software algorithms, microprocessor speeds, and video data compression enable hospitals to centrally monitor and record continuous digital EEGs of many critically ill patients at the same time. Neurotelemetry and continuous EEG monitoring provides vital information about brain function which allows early detection of changes in neurologic status. This is particularly useful when the clinical examination is limited.
