Aging in place is defined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level. There are so many ways that aging in place benefits seniors. Firstly, there is a generally higher quality of life including better mood and mental well-being. At the same time, physical health is positively impacted because remaining at home insulates people from the infection risks found in senior living facilities, reducing the chance of coming down with a serious illness.
Generally aging in place is less expensive than moving to an assisted living or nursing care facility. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development says people who choose to remain at home as they age can save thousands of dollars a month.
